Match the exact model
Read the rear model label before comparing a listing. Panasonic's shared instructions contain separate connection illustrations for the PV-V4020 and PV-V4520. A claim about the other model is not evidence about this one.
For a used PV-V4520, request a playback demonstration over the analog A/V output, not merely a photograph of the power display. Test sound from both audio outputs with a tape known to contain stereo audio.
Recording, outputs and accessories
The manual documents ordinary VHS playback, recording and timed recording. Use the model-labelled composite-video and audio connections for a TV or capture device; a modern HDMI-only display needs an appropriate powered analog-to-HDMI converter.
An RCA video cable, the appropriate analog audio cables and a matching remote are useful items to ask about. A seller's statement that a remote is universal does not establish that timer and menu functions work.
Common symptoms and safe checks
For no picture, check the selected TV input and the VCR/TV setting before treating the deck as faulty. For noisy playback, compare a second expendable known-good tape and the manual's tracking controls. These are general checks, not evidence of a model-wide defect.
If tape becomes slack, folds or fails to eject normally, stop using the machine. Do not pull the tape out, remove the cover or use a valuable recording for further testing.
