A recorder, not a digital tuner upgrade

Sony documents analog video and audio connections and conventional VCR recording functions. Those connections do not make an old analog tuner a receiver for today's digital broadcasts. If recording a current source, establish a compatible external source and authorized analog signal first.

A seller's power-on demonstration is not a transport test. Ask for evidence of sustained playback, normal rewind and clean ejection with a tape that can safely be sacrificed.

Connections and remote checks

Use the line outputs for a TV with composite inputs or for a suitable powered converter. Sony's instructions prefer A/V hookups where available. Confirm that a converter accepts the VCR's analog signal; a passive connector adapter is not a format converter.

General playback troubleshooting

Check TV input selection and compare known-good tapes before diagnosing a head fault. Tracking adjustments cannot fix a damaged tape or a failed loading mechanism.

Follow the operating instructions for cleaning recommendations. Stop immediately if the machine creases tape or makes abnormal transport noises, and seek service rather than opening the cabinet.
